Introduction to Fauvism

Fauvism, originating in the early 20th century, was a revolutionary art movement. Known for its bold colors and wild brushwork, it was led by artists like Henri Matisse. The term 'Fauvism' comes from 'les fauves,' meaning 'the wild beasts.'

Henri Matisse, a key figure in Fauvism, sought to simplify forms and use color to express emotion. His work in this period, such as 'Woman with a Hat,' broke conventional color rules, using vivid, non-naturalistic hues to convey meaning.

Fauvism greatly influenced modern art by detaching color from its traditional role of representing the natural world. This movement paved the way for future abstract and expressionist artists, emphasizing the emotional and expressive potential of color.
