History of Vision Correction
Vision correction dates back to ancient Egypt, where simple glass meniscus lenses were used. The first wearable glasses were invented in Italy, around 1286. Interestingly, early frames held the lenses together without arms.
Spectacles Evolution
Initially, spectacles were only for the wealthy. By the 18th century, designs improved with the introduction of sides, or arms, fitting over the ears. Bifocals, introduced by Benjamin Franklin, allowed for both distance and reading with one lens.
Contact Lenses Innovation
The first contact lenses were glass-blown and covered the entire eye, invented in 1887. Modern contacts, made of breathable polymers, were introduced in 1959. They offered improved comfort and became a popular alternative to glasses.
LASIK Surgery Breakthrough
LASIK surgery, introduced in the 1990s, reshapes the cornea using a laser. It has since evolved with wavefront technology that maps the eye's unique imperfections, allowing for customized corrections and reducing night vision issues.
Orthokeratology Insights
Orthokeratology involves wearing rigid, gas-permeable contact lenses overnight to temporarily reshape the cornea. This can correct myopia temporarily, providing clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or contacts.
Implantable Lenses
For those unsuitable for LASIK, implantable collamer lenses (ICLs) offer an alternative. Positioned between the iris and the natural lens, ICLs can correct a range of vision problems, including high levels of myopia, with minimal maintenance.
Vision Correction Future
Future advancements may include eye drops to improve vision or fully restore it. Bionic eye implants are also on the horizon, potentially providing vision to those with retinal diseases. The field of vision correction is rapidly evolving.
