The Political Journey of Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders was born in 1941 in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in a lower-middle-class family, he became aware of economic inequality early on, setting the stage for his future political activism.

During his time at the University of Chicago, Sanders joined the Young People's Socialist League and was an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement, organizing sit-ins against segregated housing.

Sanders's political career began in the 1970s in Vermont. He ran as an independent and lost multiple elections before becoming the mayor of Burlington by a mere 10 votes in 1981.

Elected to the House in 1990, Sanders co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He later became a senator in 2007, often collaborating across party lines despite his independent status.

Sanders's presidential runs in 2016 and 2020 brought him national attention. His campaigns, fueled by grassroots support, pushed for progressive policies like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal.

Despite not securing the presidency, Sanders has significantly shifted the Democratic Party's platform leftwards. His advocacy for wealth redistribution and social justice continues to inspire a new generation of politicians.
