Victorian fashion was governed by an intricate system of etiquette. This dictated not just clothing choices, but also social behavior, reflecting one's status and propriety in the 19th century.

During the Victorian era, it was crucial to distinguish between daywear and eveningwear. Day dresses had high necks and long sleeves, while evening gowns featured lower-cut bodices and shorter sleeves, signaling a change in formality.

Mourning attire was taken seriously, with varying stages. Deep mourning required all-black attire and no jewelry, while half-mourning allowed for the introduction of muted colors and modest accessories after a set period.

Fabrics signified social status. The wealthy donned silk and velvet, while the working class wore cotton or wool. Interestingly, etiquette extended to fabric choice, with certain materials deemed appropriate for specific times and events.

Men were not exempt from strict dress codes. A gentleman's attire included frock coats for day and tailcoats for evening. Impeccable grooming was expected, and hats were essential, with top hats for formal occasions.

Accessories were pivotal in Victorian fashion. Fans, gloves, and parasols had their own language. For instance, dropping a glove could indicate a romantic interest, and the way a fan was held could communicate a variety of messages.

Children were dressed in miniature versions of adult clothing. However, the concept of 'dressing down' emerged, with younger children wearing simpler, more comfortable clothing that allowed for greater freedom of movement.
