Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE)

SMASE stands for Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education. It is an initiative aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning in these critical subjects, particularly in under-resourced areas.

SMASE was first implemented in Kenya in the late 1990s. It started as a pilot project and later expanded to other African countries, aiming to foster a more practical and interactive approach to teaching mathematics and science.

One key aspect of SMASE is the Activity, Student-centered, Experiment, and Improvisation (ASEI) approach. This strategy encourages teachers to use locally available materials and hands-on activities to make lessons more engaging and effective.

SMASE has shown significant success. Schools that adopted the program reported improved student performance and a greater interest in STEM subjects. Teachers also reported increased confidence and effectiveness in delivering complex topics.

The success of SMASE has led to discussions about its implementation beyond Africa. There is potential for adapting its principles to other regions, especially those facing similar educational challenges, to elevate global STEM education standards.

SMASE's principles were inspired by Japanese teaching methods, which were adapted to fit the African context. This cross-continental inspiration highlights the global nature of educational innovation.
