The first known geocache was hidden by Dave Ulmer on May 3, 2000, in Oregon. He termed it the 'Great American GPS Stash Hunt,' which later evolved into geocaching. The original stash contained software, videos, books, and a slingshot.

The activity's popularity spurred the creation of a dedicated website, Geocaching.com, launched in September 2000. It centralized cache listings and logs, providing a platform for the growing community of geocachers.

Unique to geocaching are trackables and GeoCoins—items that travel from cache to cache. Each has a unique code that lets players log its journey online, adding a communal storytelling element to the game.

Geocaching has had surprising impacts, including environmental clean-ups and educational uses in schools. It has also been recognized for supporting tourism, as enthusiasts travel specifically to find caches in new places.
