Function keys, F1 to F12, are keys on a computer keyboard designed for quick access to specific functions. These keys can serve different purposes depending on the operating system and the running application.

Originally, function keys were used on older computers like the IBM PC to provide a streamlined way of executing commands without typing lengthy instructions, enhancing productivity for users not familiar with command-line interfaces.

Generally, F1 opens Help, F2 renames items, F3 initiates search, F4 reveals address bar, F5 refreshes, F6 shifts focus, F7 checks spelling, F8 accesses safe mode, F9 refreshes fields, F10 activates menu bar, F11 toggles full screen, and F12 opens Save As.
